Different nodes of Sunet Drive

Sunet Drive is based on a federated deployment of Nextcloud. This means, that every Swedish institution that has an IdP, has a dedicated Nextcloud node that can be administrated independently from other nodes, while users of different nodes can collaborate on files and folders. The difference shows after you sign in to Sunet Drive through https://drive.sunet.se; e.g., a user from Stockholm University will be delegated to su.drive.sunet.se , while a user from Umeå will be delegated to umu.drive.sunet.se. eduID users and users from non-Swedish institutions will be delegated to extern.drive.sunet.se. There are three types of nodes implemented in Sunet Drive:

  • A full node is a node provided to a paying customer. It consists of redundant front-ends, a database cluster as a backend, an S3 storage backend, and the possibility to administrate parts of the node.
  • A minimal node is a free to use node for every Swedish institution which is used to provision user accounts and enables users to collaborate with users from a full node. A minimal node is not redundant and consists of a simple database backend. It can be promoted to a full node.
  • An external node is only used to provision non-Swedish and other external user accounts.

Once a user has created an account on any of the nodes of the federated deployment, they can collaborate with users on the same node or from other nodes.
