Sharing and Re-sharing settings¶
Sunet Drive is based on Nextcloud and therefore has an abundance of settings to fine-tune the sharing of files and folders with users and groups, both with local and remote (federated) users. The default sharing settings, which can be changed by an administrator, of Sunet Drive are that it is allowed to:
- share files and folders
- share files and folders with groups
- share via link and emails
- publicly upload files
- allow sharing for everyone
- create, change, delete, and reshare as default permissions
- send shares to other servers (federated shares)
- receive shares from other servers
- send a share password by e-mail
These settings determine the technical sharing settings, and are generally complemented by policies users are bound to adhere to. Any institution is free to change the default sharing settings to suit their needs. With this, it is important to note that it is possible to create sharing settings that are seemingly conflicting, and allow e.g., receivers of federated shares to have more rights than users on a local Sunet Drive node. Please review any changes made to the sharing settings internally, to ensure that they comply with your internal policies.
Federated Sharing Considerations
Federated Sharing is the possibility to invite users from another OCM-compatible node to receive shares from Sunet Drive. This includes Sunet Drive nodes, but also for example EFSS nodes in other countries, such as Surf Research Drive, Sciebo, or CERNBox. It is an essential part of a federated network of sync-and-share solutions. Federated shares adhere to the sharing settings of the receiving party, which can be more open than that sharing policies of the sending party. E.g., if a receiving party allows public link sharing, it is not possible to limit access of a federated share via the public link.
S3 Bucket Sharing Considerations
S3 buckets can have their own sharing settings, which allow to limit certain sharing-functions on a project level, while keeping the general sharing settings as open and convenient as possible. This refers mainly to the “enable sharing” setting for S3 buckets, as described in the article Managing S3 buckets in Sunet Drive.
